Dental Sensitivity

Dental sensitivity is a temporary and painful syndrome caused by exposed dentine (internal part of your tooth) to external stimuli such as hot or cold beverages and sweet or acid food substances.

There are many causes of tooth sensitivity, including:

  • Worn tooth enamel from using a rigid toothbrush or brushing too aggressively.
  • Tooth corrosion due to highly acidic foods and beverages.
  • Tooth destruction due to bulimia or gastroesophageal reflux disease.
  • Gum recession that leaves your root surface exposed.

In addition to recommending toothpaste without high levels of abrasives, at Gil Dental Group, your dental specialist may prescribe an at-home, brush-on fluoride gel or a fluoride rinse, or high fluoride level toothpaste specially formulated to make your teeth less sensitive and provide extra protection against cavities. Other treatments — such as fluoride varnishes — can be painted onto the teeth to provide additional fortification.
